Grants & Incentives

Available in Downtown Laurel

WE BELIEVE business owners in Downtown Laurel deserve every opportunity. Potential tax credit for improvements and new businesses in the Central Business District is reviewed on a case by case basis, beginning in the City Clerk’s office. Here are some options to consider when starting or improving your business:

Do you qualify?

If your building is within the Laurel Main Street District (Downtown Laurel) and you are a Laurel Main Street member, then you are qualified to apply for the grant.

Special exceptions are awarded on a case by case basis at the discretion of the Laurel Main Street Design Committee and the Laurel Main Street Board.

Grants are awarded every two months. All applications received will be reviewed by the LMS Design Committee, scored based on a rubric system, and presented to the LMS Board at the next board meeting. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to those projects that have a significant and visual economic impact and that show dedication to preservation of the historic integrity of the building.

Grants are also dependent on the availability of funding. An approved facade grant application is not a guarantee that a grant will be awarded.

A business may only apply for a facade grant once every three years, per facade.

Street-facing facades will be given priority, but off-street facades will be considered based on LMS Design Committee criteria.

Please note: Completed grant applications must be submitted before work is completed, or the project will not be considered. Priority will be given to projects that begin the application process before work is begun.

Laurel Main Street Façade Grant Program

The LMS Façade & Amenities grant was created to help downtown business owners refresh and update their downtown buildings. This grant will reimburse up to $5,000 per project for exterior improvements to buildings within downtown Laurel.

A fully funded grant will reimburse up to one-third of the funds invested in the project by the applicant, but applicants are not guaranteed or entitled to full funding of their requested amount.

Grants are scored and awarded at the discretion of the LMS Design Committee and the LMS Board, but funds will not be released until work is complete.
